Review: Ramona and Beezus

by Jane Boursaw on July 27, 2010

ramona-and-beezus-poster Movie:Ramona and Beezus’
In Theaters: July 23, 2010
Director: Elizabeth Allen
Runtime: 104 minutes
MPAA Rating: G
Gecko Rating: 4 Geckos

G-rated movies are so few and far between these days, so I’m always thrilled when they come along, mainly because it gives younger kids a chance to see a movie without too much objectionable content.

Even better when the movie is tied to a beloved children’s book series, like the Ramona and Beezus books by Beverly Cleary. I read them all when I was a kid, and still read them even as an adult. Her “young love” series is great, too. ‘The Luckiest Girl’ is one of my all-time favorite books ever. At 94, Cleary is still writing and going strong!

‘Ramona and Beezus’ follows the adventures – or rather, MISadventures – of 9-year-old Ramona Quimby, played by adorable newcomer Joey King. She’s quite imaginative, so we get interspersed scenes from Ramona’s head, like her flying through the clouds or dangling over a perilous gorge (in reality, she’s hanging from some playground equipment).

traverse-city-film-festival-michael-moore-1 The 6th Annual Traverse City Film Festival runs this week from Tuesday, July 27 through Sunday, August 1, in Traverse City, Michigan (my home town!).

The film festival just gets better and better each year. It not only brings hundreds of great movies to northern Michigan that we wouldn’t otherwise see on the big screen here, but it’s had a tremendous boost on our local economy, as well.

This year’s festival promises filmgoers another round of “Just Great Movies,” including 80 feature films and 40 short films representing more than 25 countries. The late John Hughes will be honored with the festival’s annual Michigan Filmmakers Award, and Tom Bernard and Michael Barker, co-presidents of Sony Pictures Classic, will be presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award for their 30 years of work.

Other highlights include panels and Q&A sessions with filmmakers, a tribute to The Beatles in honor of the 40th anniversary of their breakup, a salute to Cuban film, two U.S. premieres from past favorites Sabina Guzzanti (‘Draquila – Italy Trembles’) and Vít Klusák and Filip Remunda (‘Czech Dream’), as well as a new Film Forum Series and the return of Film Industry Panels and the TCFF Film School. For a full schedule of events and more info, visit the Traverse City Film Festival’s official site.

For a story for Variety, I caught up with founder Michael Moore, who talked about the festival’s beginnings, restoring the downtown State Theatre, and how Republicans actually hug him on the street now.

Mad Men Recap: Don’s Still a Jerk, Betty is Mean

by Jane Boursaw on July 26, 2010

mad-men-jon-hamm-public-relations-s04e01 (Season 4, Episode 1, ‘Public Relations’) Words can’t describe how happy I am to have ‘Mad Men’ back. Did you watch the season four premiere last night? I watched the screener copy several weeks ago, and watched it again last night just because.

I love the “scrappy upstart” that Don Draper and Roger Sterling are building. Everyone seems energized to be creating a new ad company together, even if they were ticked off at Don for the crummy interview he gave, which resulted in a crummy story their clients hated because he didn’t mention them.

And let’s face it. Being an ad guy, Don should know first-hand that what he says will come back to either haunt or hurt the company.

Angelina Jolie’s Salt Gets Mixed Reviews from the Web

July 23, 2010

People either love Angelina Jolie or not. I’m in the love camp. I’ve always had a big girl-crush on her strength and independence and willingness to go her own way, despite what others say. In ‘Salt,’ her new movie in theaters today, she plays a CIA agent on the run after a double cross. The [...]

New Movie Friday: Salt! Ramona and Beezus!

July 23, 2010

I just read an interview with Angelina Jolie in the August issue of Vanity Fair, and she turned down the role of Bond Girl once, noting that she’d rather play James Bond. That’s my kind of girl. A year later, she was offered the role of Evelyn Salt, and from all the buzz, it sounds [...]

Which Vampire Diaries Brother Would You Take Home: Stefan or Damon?

July 22, 2010

I’m such a vampire geek lately. I love the ‘Twilight’ franchise and think the movies keep getting better and better (check out my review for ‘Eclipse’). I’m a huge fan of HBO’s ‘True Blood,’ even though some of you think this season leaves something to be desired. I love ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer,’ ‘Angel,’ and [...]

Vanessa Marcil Returns to General Hospital on Aug. 11, 2010 – Watch a Clip

July 22, 2010

Once you get involved in a soap opera, it sort of sticks with you for the rest of your life. Even if you don’t watch it consistently, you still care about the characters you’ve grown to love (or hate!). That’s how it is with me and ‘General Hospital.’ I started watching the ABC soap around [...]

Is Gimli in The Hobbit? I Say Yes

July 21, 2010

A while back, I wrote a piece on whether John Rhys-Davies was planning to play Gimli in ‘The Hobbit,’ and also linked to it from my PopEater post on how things are going with ‘The Hobbit.’ Commenters noted that Gimli isn’t even in ‘The Hobbit,’ so this isn’t exactly news. Hayley, who blogs at Two [...]

Rubicon is Mesmerizing – So Is James Badge Dale

July 21, 2010

AMC sent me the first four episodes of ‘Rubicon,’ and it’s the best show I’ve seen since, well, ‘Mad Men,’ another AMC show. I actually watched each episode twice, not only to catch stuff I missed the first time around, but because it’s just that good. The production is feature-film quality, and like ‘Mad Men,’ [...]

Have You Ever Drank Blood? My Family Did. Tru Blood, That Is

July 19, 2010

Some time ago, the nice people who rep Tru Blood sent me a case of four bottles of the beverage pegged to the HBO show, ‘True Blood.’ I have to say, it’s a little disconcerting drinking something with “blood” in the title. Even though you KNOW it’s not real blood, there’s still that little inkling [...]

True Blood Recap: 9 Crimes – Why Was Russell Edgington at the Werewolf Bar?

July 11, 2010

(Season 3, Episode 28) First of all, I sort of loved Sookie’s makeover goth look when she and Alcide went to the were-bar in tonight’s episode of ‘True Blood.’ Not that she should go with it all the time, but it’s kind of a nice change – like, for Halloween or something. I like the [...]

True Blood Recap: 9 Crimes – Should Sookie Be With Bill or Eric … or Alcide?

July 11, 2010

(Season 3, Episode 28) Sookie Stackhouse has got some high class problems on ‘True Blood,’ doesn’t she? I’ve always been onboard the Sookie-Bill train, but every time I see her with Eric, it reminds me of their smoking hot chemistry. It makes me wonder if she’d be better off with Eric than Bill. They really [...]
