Download the Real Mount Doom from Lord of the Rings

by Jane Boursaw on August 24, 2010

Ngauruhoe-mount-doom-lotr We here at Film Gecko are lucky to have friends all over the world, including New Zealand, where the ‘Lord of the Rings’ trilogy was filmed. And, hopefully, where ‘The Hobbit’ will be filmed, if MGM can ever sort itself out.

Our friends over at Frugal Kiwi are offering a very cool photo freebie of Ngauruhoe, the real-life mountain that was used as Mount Doom in the films. The volcano last erupted in 1977, and yeah, I can totally see Sam and Frodo struggling their way up this mountain, eagles flying overhead and hot lava oozing everywhere. Not to mention the creature Gollum, trying to wrestle it away from them.

I’ve included a little preview here, but hop over to Frugal Kiwi and grab the full-sized version of the photo for yourself.
