Who says you can’t get famous from a YouTube video? When my kids first tuned me into Fred, the YouTube kid who at this writing has scored more than 570,000,000 – yes, that’s millions – hits on his YouTube Channel, I thought, who IS this kid?
Then he showed up on the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards. Now he has his own movie, appropriately titled ‘Fred: The Movie’ on DVD and Digital Download Oct. 5. Who knows if this is Fred’s 15 minutes of fame or if he’s in it for the long haul, but I’ve got a screener copy of the movie headed my way, so I’ll let you know if it’s any good.
First of all, his name’s not really Fred. It’s Lucas Cruikshank. But he plays Fred on TV, YouTube and now on DVD. In the movie, he’s in love with the girl next door, Judy (Pixie Lott, UK pop music icon). But his nemesis neighbor Kevin (Jake Weary), thwarts Fred’s attempts to see her, and when he finally succeeds in making it over to Judy’s house – she’s moved!
With the advice of his super cool dad (John Cena), Fred embarks on an epic journey full of wacky fun to find her. It runs 84 minutes, and isn’t rated, although I’m guessing we can expect PG material. Also stars Jennette McCurdy from the hit Nickelodeon series ‘iCarly’ as Fred’s best friend.
Special Features:
- ‘From Web-Cam to Leading Man’ – Follow Fred’s journey to fame in this in-depth documentary…as told by the boy himself along with the executives who gave him his first movie deal.
- ‘Fred’s First Film: Same Dude, Big Crew’ – A behind-the-scenes look at the making of Fred’s first feature film which includes talent and filmmaker interviews.
- An all-new never-before-seen Fred video.
- Classic Fred video.
- Audio commentary with director Clay Weiner, writer David Goodman and actor Lucas Cruikshank.

Oh dear. My middle school son has been a Fred fan for a long, long time. Have you seen some of the YouTube videoes? They are painful to watch. But hey, good for Fred for leveraging his 15 min of fame into cash for a movie. I am sure we will be renting this one. God help me.
So painful! I think Fred must really be a tween/teen thing. I kind of wonder where he’ll go from here.
