Does Jack Black Need a New Direction?

by Jane Boursaw on December 29, 2010

I wrote up a review of ‘Gulliver’s Travels’ over at Reel Life With Jane, and gave it 3 out of 5 Reels. Not totally awful, but not one of the best movies of 2010 either.

gullivers-travels-poster-250I’m starting to wonder whether Jack Black might need a new direction. I’ve loved his particular brand of goofy humor dating back to ‘The School of Rock’ — I admit I didn’t know much about him prior to that — but now it’s starting to wear a little thin.

He’s carved out a respectable career as the pudgy loser who makes good – which he’ll no doubt continue to do in ‘Kung Fu Panda 2,’ due in theaters May 27, 2011. But maybe it’s time for Jack Black to do a Seth Rogen and buff out for a cool superhero movie. at least, I hope ‘The Green Hornet’ is cool.

It’ll be interesting to see Black’s films in the coming year, not just ‘Kung Fu Panda 2,’ but also ‘Bernie’ (Richard Linklater’s comedy about a mortician who kills a wealthy widow), and ‘The Big Year’ (David Frankel’s film about three bird watchers hoping to spot the rarest bird in North America).

Any thoughts on Jack Black’s career? Are you a fan? Does he need a new direction? Or are you happy to see him play the same character forever?

I’ve always liked Jack’s TenaciousD work, but those are shorts. In longer projects, I find he wears on my nerves.

A bit stuck in a rut, methinks. But then he’s probably only seeing a certain kind of script. Didn’t he show up as the love interest, though, in a romcom a couple of years ago? I’m trying to think what he might do next to widen his range.
